If Lael’s room is the one that is constantly changing, Caeden’s room never changes – except for the dirty cups and bowls that accumulate! But now change has come. He has a new bed, desk and shelves, all built by me with my always helpful parents.
The bed was definitely the easiest. I designed the bed based on this one I found on Etsy. Instead of skinny width boards though, I used leftover wood I had from when we built my deck. We started off by building a frame for the face boards to be nailed to. The frame was built by yep, you guessed it – leftover 2×4’s I had in the garage. Then I just found the center point of the frame and measured on the diagonal for each board. Measure twice, and then (hopefully) cut once. After the face boards were all nailed on, I decided on a dark brown stain and then my Mom and I went to work on it.
The light was a cheap-o brass model I picked up at the Habitat Store for a couple of dollars. I added a couple of coats of spray paint and it’s transformed into a sleek night-time reading light.
Now, the desk and shelves were a little harder – mostly because it was imperative that we had to find the studs before installing the shelves, since they are crazy heavy. I based the design of the desk and shelves on this Pinterest link. Sadly, it does not link to an actual website with more pictures or instructions. But, I turned it over to my Dad, and let him work out the math details – all the lengths of wood and the cuts etc. (Math is sooooooo not my thing!) I started out thinking I wanted the vertical pipes to connect the shelves and desk, but after seeing the cost of pipe (yikes, kinda pricey) I changed my mind. I also considered that CIA might want to move the desk to another location in his room instead of under the shelves so I decided not to connect them. All of the wood used was from the stash of random wood pieces in my garage. Yes, I am probably a wood hoarder! I don’t even know what the piece we used for the desk was from. Possibly an old table leaf?? In the picture you will notice a long piece of wood leaning on the wall to the right of the desk – ignore that! It is trim that I still need to attach to the fronts of the shelves. I also still need to stain the shelves. I got a little ahead of myself taking pictures!
Here are a few pictures of ‘The Fam’ building the bed.
